Facing this audience on the stage, I have the exciting feeling ofparticipating in the march of history, for hat e are facing today is more thana mere petition or contest. It is an assembly of some of China's mosttalented and motivated people, representatives of a younger generation that arepreparing themselves for the ing of a ne century.

I'm grateful that I've been given this opportunity, at such a historicmoment, to stand here as a spokesman of my generation and to take a serious lookback at the past 15 years, a crucial period for every one of us and for thisnation as ell.

Though it is only ithin my poer to tell about my personal experience, andonly a tiny fragment of it at that, it still represents, I believe, the root ofa spirit hich has been essential to me and to all the people bred by the past15 years.

In my elementary years, there as a little girl in the class ho orkedvery hard but someho could never do satisfactorily in her lessons.

The teacher asked me to help her, and it as obvious that she expected alot from me. but as a young boy, restless, thoughtless, I alays tried to evadeher so as to get more time to enjoy myself.

One day before the final exam, she came up to me and said, "Could youplease explain this to me? I ant very much to do better this time. " I startedexplaining, and finished in a hurry. Pretending not to notice her still confusedeyes, I ran off quickly. Nat surprisingly, she again did very badly in the exam.And to months later, at the beginning of the ne semester, ord came of herdeath of blood cancer. No one ever kne about the little task I failed tofulfill, but I couldn't five myself. I simply couldn't fet her eyes, hichseem to be asking, "Why didn't you do a little more to help me, hen it as soeasy for you? Why didn't you understand a little better the trust placed in you,so that I ould not have to leave this orld in such pain and regret?"

I as about eight or nine years old at that time, but in a ay it as thevery starting point of my life, for I began to understand the ord"responsibility" and to learn to alays do my duties faithfully and devotedly,for the implications of that sacred ord has daned on me: the mutual need andtrust of people, the co-operation and inter-reliance hich are the veryfoundation of human society.

Later in my life, I continued to experience many failures. But never againdid I feel that regret hich struck me at the death of the girl, for it makes myheart satisfied to think that I have alays done everything in my poer tofulfill my responsibilities as best I can.

As I gre up, changed and improved by this incident and many other similarones, I began to perceive the changes taking place around me and to find thatsociety, in a ay, as in its formative years like myself. Ne buildings, nemodities and ne fashions appear every day.

Ne ideas, ne information, ne technologies. People can talk ith eachother from any corner of the earth in a matter of seconds. Society is beingmore petitive.

Words like individuality and creativity are getting more emphasis and morepeople are rearded for their hard ork and efforts. Such is the era in hichthis generation ,gros and matures.

Such is the era in hich this generation ill take over the nation from ourfathers and learn to run it. Yet in the meantime, many problems still exist.

We learn that crimes take place in broad daylight ith crods of peoplelooking on and not assisting. We hear that there are still about 1 millionchildren in this country ho can't even afford to go to elementary schools hileenormous sums of money are being squandered aay on dinner parties and luxurycars.

We buy shoddy medicines, or merely orthless junk in the name of medicines,that aggravate, rather than alleviate our diseases since money, many peoplebelieve, is the most important thing in the orld that must be made, even at theexpense of morality and responsibility.

Such an era, therefore, determines that e are a generation ith a keenersense of petition and efficiency and a greater readiness to think criticallyand act creatively.

Such an era, furthermore, demands, that e are a generation ith a clearperception of our historical responsibility and an aggressive ill to takeaction and solve the problems. History has long been preparing these qualitiesin this generation and it is no calling us forard to give testimony to ourpatriotism and heroism toards this nation and all humanity.

Standing here no, I think of the past 15 years of my life as an ordinarystudent. Probably I'll be an ordinary man for the rest of my life. But thisdoesn't discourage me any, for I kno that ith my sense of responsibility anddevoted efforts to alays strive, for the best, it's going to be a meaningfuland orthhile life that I ill be living.

Standing here no, I think of the past 15 years of this nation, hich hasachieved greatness that inspired millions of people of my age, most of hom illnot attain fame or prestige and only a fe of hom ill be remembered byposterity. But that doesn't discourage us any, because e kno that the orldatches, the orld listens, the orld is aiting to see here this nation illbe heading in a time of rich opportunities and fierce petition.

I can't ever fet that little girl in my class ho couldn't had the sameopportunities as any of us here to enjoy a onderful life today and a hopefulorld tomorro.

It is the sacred responsibility of this generation to face up to thechallenges of the ne century and to devote our seat and blood, our isdom andpassion, to the historic cause of making this nation a greater and happier landfor every one of us.

We are not going to evade that responsibility. We are going to let peopledon. And people, far and near, ill hear of us.
